Your questions answered

You might have a lot of questions about your cancer. Here we answer some of the questions our staff most frequently answer.

If you have any further questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask one of our team who will be happy to help you.

Can I only come to the unit when I have an appointment?

During opening hours we have an open door policy and you can pop in at any time to speak to the team and discuss any concerns or worries that you may have.

How do I contact the unit?

Our office contact number is the main hospital number 01483 571122 and extension 2596.

Alternatively, all the team members have work mobiles that our patients can either text or ring during working hours. All of these numbers are listed on the meet the team page. Some patients also contact the team via Facebook messenger as well.

What happens if I need inpatient care?

There are no inpatient beds on the unit and you will most likely be cared for on Onslow Ward, which is the Trust’s dedicated cancer ward. Where possible the team will do their best to provide you with a side room, but this is not always possible. The TYAC team will also come and visit you regularly during your stay.

What happens when my treatment ends?

If your treatment has been successful, you will normally have check-ups at three months, six months and a year. There will come a time when you are discharged from your doctor’s care, but the unit will not discharge you. All our patients have open access to the unit and services and they can contact us with any queries post treatment.

Getting back to normal after you have finished cancer treatment is not always easy. You may be worried about going back to full time education and work, or may have concerns about your cancer returning. The team will continue to support you and your family as you navigate this stage, including continuing to offer counselling and coaching.

I am concerned about my fertility

We can offer support and advice about fertility concerns and refer you to a local fertility clinic.

Will I have to transition to adult care?

Your needs are our main concern and we have the discretion to continue to see existing patients after their 31st birthday.

What support is available for parents?

The team is always happy to support and work with any parents whose children are under their care.

There is also a closed Facebook group for the parents of patients to help them get support from others in the same situation.
