Urgent referral

Why have I been referred urgently to hospital?

You have been referred to Royal Surrey because your symptoms or test results indicate that you may need further investigation by a specialist. NHS England has set a new target of finding out whether or not you have cancer within 28 days of your referral.

Receiving a referral does not mean that you have cancer. However, in the event that cancer is diagnosed, getting the diagnosis early increases the likelihood of treatment being effective.

What happens now?

We will contact you to organise a telephone, face-to-face appointment or diagnostic test. If you cannot keep this appointment, please call the appointments team to re-arrange on: 01483 571122 Ext: 4002. Please note, this number is for queries relating to initial appointments only. If you have any other appointment queries or questions beyond your first appointment, you will need to speak to the oncology appointments team. They can be contacted on: 01483 406761.

You may need to be available for further diagnostic tests and consultations over the next few weeks in order to receive a diagnosis quickly. It is important that you attend these appointments and notify the team promptly if you will be unable to attend.
