About us

Our story

The doors to our current home, originally known as St Luke’s Cancer Centre, were first opened by Queen Elizabeth II and the former Duke of Edinburgh in 1997. However, our history of pioneering the latest cancer treatment dates back more than 60 years with the centre being the first in the UK to introduce a Betatron electron therapy unit in 1967 – the most advanced cancer treatment of its time.

Today our world renowned experts continue the tradition of leading the way in developing and delivering ground-breaking cancer treatments. As one of the country’s major cancer centres, we offer rapid diagnosis, advanced treatments and access to cutting edge research to more than 8,000 patients each year across the south east of England, including delivering 4,000 chemotherapy treatments, almost 3,500 sessions of radiotherapy and over 2,000 cancer surgeries.

Our patients benefit from unique personalised treatment plans developed by our experts, as well as the skills of our accomplished minimal access and robotic surgeons, who are recognised as being at the forefront of their respective fields. Our state-of-the-art-facilities have recently undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment and the commitment to the future of cancer care continues with the ambitious development of our new Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre. This will see one of Europe’s leading surgical facilities created right here in Guildford, Surrey.

Royal Surrey Cancer Centre also plays an active part in the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance, ensuring patients across the region and beyond benefit from world-class care and treatment we provide.
