Oncology Champion

Each of our six clinical divisional champion awards recognise individuals and teams that consistently demonstrate exceptional commitment to patient-centred care, through empathy, communication and respect. They collaborate with colleagues, innovate for improvement and put their patients at the heart of all they do. Here’s what their colleagues wrote about them in the nominations.

Emma Masters, Lead SACT Nurse

Emma Masters, Lead SACT Nurse

Emma is a strong leader, great listener, effective communicator and incredibly patient focused. Her tireless work ethic and unwavering commitment to cancer services and the patient journey make her an invaluable asset to the organisation.

She is constantly forward-thinking and trying to find ways to improve the service. She’s been instrumental in prescribing supportive treatments to prevent delays to patients, she oversees the Mobile Unit which was established to treat patients closer to home and has set up and funded a coffee area for the patients to enjoy.

Emma is a true team player who is always willing to lend a hand with the clinical jobs but is also an expert in everything oncology. She is a kind inspirational mentor and goes out of her way to make sure staff are happy and supported. Emma is a joy to work with as she strives for excellence in delivering safe patient care every day.

Radiotherapy Physics team

Radiotherapy Physics team

The delivery of compassionate, safe care is at the core of everything this team does. This year, in the face of operational difficulties, they pulled together and worked flexibly above and beyond the call of duty to make sure patients got the care they needed promptly.

The team includes medical physicists, radiographers, technicians and administrative staff. Together, they are responsible for the planning of radiotherapy treatments, calibration and quality assurance of the radiotherapy department's imaging and treatment machines, and provision of a world-leading brachytherapy service.

Although much of the work they do is behind the scenes, they have an incredibly strong patient focus and work very flexibly alongside the clinical teams to ensure an excellent patient experience.

They deliver a high-quality service and cutting-edge techniques against the backdrop of equipment challenges, staff shortages and unprecedented demand – it’s a testament to the dedication of every one of its members.

Stuart Donlin, Ward Coordinator

Stuart Donlin, Ward Coordinator

Stuart is a fantastic first contact at the reception desk into the Cancer Centre. He welcomes people and looks after them with such a warm, patient and compassionate manner.

The Cancer Centre is always extremely busy and yet he always shows complete respect and calmness to each patient and staff member he deals with. He clearly recognises that patients may be nervous or distressed and helps put them at ease.

He advocates for patients that he is concerned about to clinic staff. He efficiently answers or finds out the answers to so many questions. He helps to minimise tension and create a friendly atmosphere in the reception and waiting area and many patients comment on how helpful he is. He works above and beyond his role every day.
