Skin cancer

Patient speaking to radiologist

Appointments

Depending on where you are in your skin cancer journey, you may have any of the following types of clinic appointments.

These appointments may take place face-to-face or over the telephone. If the appointment is taking place in person, its location will depend on the specialist you are seeing. For example appointments may be in dermatology, surgery (Castle Outpatients, level H, main hospital), Maxillofacial (Outpatients 11) or Oncology Outpatients (level B of the Cancer Centre). Therefore, please pay close attention to the instructions in your appointment letter.

Appointments with dermatologist or skin clinical nurse specialist (CNS)

You may see a dermatologist or a skin clinical nurse specialist, who looks at all your skin to check for suspicious lesions. During an outpatients appointment they can perform biopsies and minor operations.

Appointments for surgery

If surgery is an option for you, you will have an appointment with your consultant surgeon who will outline the procedure they recommend. At this appointment, your skin CNS will also be present and available to answer any questions you or your loved ones may have. These appointments normally take place in the main hospital, either Castle Outpatients or Outpatients 11.

Ahead of any surgery you will also have a pre-operative assessment to ensure your suitability and fitness for surgery. This will take place in Outpatients 15 (level A of the main hospital). Learn more about this appoinment.

After surgery, you will see a member of your surgical team at regular intervals to see how you are recovering and if any further treatment is needed.

Wound care nurse

If you have had maxillofacial surgery, you may see the wound care nurses to look after any surgical wounds and change any dressings.

Oncology appointments

If you are referred to a consultant oncologist, this appointment will take place in the Oncology Outpatients department (level B, Cancer Centre). During this appointment your oncologist will take a clinical history and discuss your possible treatment options. This could include immunotherapy or targeted treatments.
