Rest of England Public - David Chuter

I am an Oesophageal cancer survivor, my life saving treatment (an Oesophagectomy) was in 2006 at the Royal Surrey.

Now living on the South Coast, married and with two daughters and three grandchildren.

My background was in the Print Industry involved as Health and Safety Consultant and Auditor, Food Packaging Safety Expert and ISO Quality, Environmental and Data Protection Auditors.

My reason to become a Governor is to give something back to the hospital and to get involved with helping and supporting other patients on their cancer journey, cancer research has become a big part of my life now to make sure the patient voice and experience is heard and used in research.

I can do this by being involved with the Royal Surrey in many ways as a Governor and Chairing the Patient Experience Committee means I can ensure that the patients voice is heard at board level.

Also I can help give my views as well as the views of the public to the hospital as a Governor.

I do run a local Cancer Patients Support group, celebrating our fifteenth year in December, which is an important way of patient support by other patients

I have many volunteer roles local and nationally which are all about supporting patients from diagnosis, through treatment and living with and beyond cancer.

The Royal Surrey is one of the top Cancer Centres in the UK for many cancers, and with the University next door, medical research is a big part of both organisations which is encouraging patients, carers and the public to be involved so my volunteer roles can add to their voices.

My volunteer roles include Chairing the NHS Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance as spokesperson for the Patient Champions, member of the NHS Leadership Academy, NIHR (National Institute of Health research) Academy Funding Selection Committee and NCRI (National Cancer Research Institute) Consumer Forum.
