Update on Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC)

Following the completion of a thorough survey across all of the Trust’s sites a small amount of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) has been found in some plant rooms on the Royal Surrey Hospital site in Guildford.

The areas where the RAAC has been identified is in roof top plant rooms which are not accessible by patients, visitors or staff. Measures have been put in place to ensure that engineers who do need to visit these plant rooms to maintain equipment are safe and the process has been inspected by the national NHS RAAC team. The RAAC is in good condition and shows no signs of cracking or deflection. Supporting columns are being put in place shortly as an additional safety measure.

The Trust estates team has been working with specialist structural engineers to ensure we have the best possible advice and guidance and safety is our priority. We have joined the national RAAC programme and have a clear protocol for managing it, including removal and replacement in the coming months.
