Senior Sister shortlisted for Nursing Times Award

Huge congratulations to Alene Galvo, Senior Sister on Eashing Ward, who has been shortlisted from hundreds of candidates across the UK for Nurse Leader of the Year in the Nursing Times Awards 2023.

Alene, who has worked for Royal Surrey for 21 years, was nominated for the award by Melissa Fiel, Clinical Practice Facilitator.

Melissa praised Alene’s outstanding coaching and mentoring skills saying: “I wouldn’t be in my leadership role today if it wasn’t for Alene and I know so many nurses, and leaders too, who she has coached that have benefited from her wisdom and advice. She is an inspiring manager and leader and is incredibly skilled at what she does. I really wanted to nominate her for this important award to recognise her dedication and talent."

After hearing the surprise news about becoming a Nursing Times finalist, Alene said she was shocked and overwhelmed but very happy.

She said: “I do enjoy the leadership part of my role. There are always lots of challenges. For me, it is important to be the kind of leader who gets their hands dirty, to work as hard as my team, working closely with them through the good and bad times.

“I’m thrilled to be put forward for this award, it’s a real honour, and I appreciate Melissa taking the time to nominate me.”

The winners of the 2023 Nursing Times Awards will be announced on 25 October at a ceremony in London and we wish Alene the very best of luck.
