A successful pilot project involving Royal Surrey staff has won a prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) award in the category of Most Effective Contribution to Clinical Redesign.
‘Targeted Prostate Health Check’, a project to identify and treat prostate cancer patients, was led by Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance (SSCA), in partnership with virtual hospital provider Medefer.
The project used GP records to identify males with risk factors for prostate cancer based on age, ethnicity, and family history.
Around 1,550 men were then invited by text message to enrol in the prostate assessment programme. They were asked to complete an online survey about their risk factors and those eligible were then invited for a PSA test and a urine test at local community clinics.
Those with a raised PSA level were then referred directly for treatment at Royal Surrey.
Royal Surrey’s Clinical Director of Urology, Professor Langley, also the Co-Chair for Urology at the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance, was integral to success of the pilot.
He said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award which celebrates and recognises the hard work and commitment of everyone involved to bring about a pathway change to improve outcomes for patients.
“This recognition will bring significant endorsement to the Targeted Prostate Health Check as it is expanded across the alliance footprint.”
The second phase of the Targeted Prostate Health Check has now been launched within Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance and plans are in place to expand the service to other Primary Care Networks across the cancer alliance footprint by the end of March 2024.
