A patient who experienced baby loss with us has nominated our Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) team for a prestigious award.

They have been named finalists for Bereavement Team of the Year at the annual Mariposa Awards for the supportive care they offer.

This is the first time that the team have been nominated and they will not find out who put them forward or why until the ceremony in London next month.

Senior Sister, Sarah Hard, said: “It feels very special for the team to have been nominated and shortlisted for the caring and supportive environment that we have created. We are very fortunate to have a lovely team of doctors and nurses who support women and their partners throughout their loss.”

As Consultant Lead for EPAU, Miss Chim Kalumbi added: “In the UK around one in five of every pregnancies end in miscarriage, so by its very nature EPAU can be a challenging and, at times, a very difficult place to work.

“While we cannot remove the pain and grief for a family, we are committed to providing the very best care to help them through this devastating time.”

Royal Surrey’s EPAU looks after approximately 300 women a month, who are experiencing problems or complications in early pregnancy.
