Trainee nurses from Chicago flew across the pond to learn more about healthcare in the NHS.
The group of Student nurses who spent the day at Royal Surrey, were welcomed by Jo Mountjoy Chief Nurse. They enjoyed a tour of the hospital, meeting many different members of staff and Student nurses from the University of Surrey.
The students are in the third year of their pre-licensure programme and are enrolled in the Community Health Nursing course.
Sue Lore, Practice Development Sister said: “It was a brilliant day. The staff in the hospital excelled and were very enthusiastic about their areas and imparting what they do for patients, to the students. The day was a great success; the students absolutely loved it and they were so appreciative. It gave them a real insight into the NHS.”
The students were given a tour and visited ICU, ED, Eashing ward and Oncology. They also learnt about the Hospital at Home service, SDEC and the Community Discharge team.
Professor Patricia Stapleton from Loyola University of Chicago said: “The students were particularly interested in the opportunity to visit Royal Surrey to learn more about the NHS model for the delivery of nursing care, the patient populations that the hospital serves and the types of services provided by an acute care hospital.
"Because of the ever accelerating turmoil in the US health care delivery system, they are quite interested in learning about the British healthcare system, and the access to healthcare that is provided for the vast majority of UK residents.”
The students were enthusiastic about their visit.
Julia Rugai said: “I thoroughly enjoyed touring the different units and meeting the staff members. Thank you for all the information about healthcare in the UK.”
Elizabeth Castillo added: “Thank you so much for welcoming us and showing us around. It is so amazing to hear from you – I wish we had an NHS!”
