Lymphoedema treatments

Skin care

It is important to keep the skin and tissues on an area of lymphoedema in good condition, this will help to prevent/reduce the risk of infection (cellulitis). If you notice any signs of cellulitis that include a red/ hot/ swollen limb and you are feeling generally unwell, please seek urgent medical advice.

You can start skin care straight away, this means you can apply cream to the skin over your lymphoedema area.

Compression garments or bandaging

In the form of elastic compression garments to help prevent the swelling from building up in the limb. It is important that compression is correctly fitted so please do not purchase this yourself it should be prescribed.

A programme of exercise and movement

Finding the right exercise for you is important, the lymphatic system relies on movement for it to work effectively.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Swimming, aqua aerobics

  • Yoga, Pilates, Tai chi

  • Nordic walking and any other type of brisk walking

  • Muscle pumping and strengthening exercises

  • Gym work

  • Dancing

At the clinic we run Tripudio exercise classes. If you are interested in joining a class, please ask for more information about this when you attend the clinic.

Self Lymphatic Drainage (SLD)

A massage technique that is based on the principles of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD).  It is designed to be carried out by patients themselves – or their relatives or carers. You will be shown how to carryout SLD if it is relevant to your condition.

Weight management

Maintaining a healthy weight is important in lymphoedema to not put extra strain on an already challenged lymphatic system.

Reassessment and monitoring of progress

This is essential to ensure good results and the team may need to review the treatment plan.

The clinic advocates supported self-management.
