Sally said: “Pharmacy plays an important role in oncology, helping to introduce new, innovative treatments to make sure patients have access to the latest evidence-based medicines.
“Oncology patients require complex medicines, which have to be taken very particularly, and we make sure they and their carers have the right information. Behind the scenes, we have prescribing system roles to ensure that medicines are prescribed in a safe and standardised way. We’re also fortunate to have a licensed aseptic unit, which allows us to manufacture our own chemotherapy medicines and rely less on buying in medication. It gives us more opportunity to offer a broad range of treatments for patients including clinical trial treatments and treatments with a short expiry time.
“I feel passionate about giving our oncology patients as good an experience as possible and making sure they have access to the latest treatments. This is achievable because of the brilliant team that works in St Luke’s and that’s probably the most rewarding aspect of my job – working with really dedicated staff towards a common goal of doing the best for our patients.
“Of course, there are challenges. Sixteen years ago, there were around 40 patients a day receiving chemotherapy treatment and now we provide treatment for up to 140 patients a day, but all the different members of the team and the multi-disciplinary professions work well together and it’s this phenomenal team effort that makes it a very special place to work.”
