Guildford Public - Jay Woogara

I am the author of “Sugarcane to Surrey” which has recently been published by Palewell Press. I have worked as a nurse, a trained Barrister, Solicitor and a senior lecturer in Law and Ethics at the University of Surrey. Since 1990 I have become a Guildfordian, actively involved in training both nursing and medical professionals in the prevention of clinical negligence in Surrey. In 2003, as part of my PhD, I conducted research at RSCH to determine the extent to which health professionals respect the privacy and dignity of patients. Following my recommendations key aspects of my research has been subsequently implemented and my published papers have become part of some university’s nursing course curriculum.

I am very interested in all aspects of patient care but becoming a recent patient at RSCH has helped focus my mind on patient experience. I feel that all patients should be treated with respect. A culture of openness should prevail at all levels within a ward and departmental settings so that staff are able to express their opinions freely if, at any time, the standard of care is compromised without fear of intimidation.

As a Governor I shall bring my experience of the NHS with me and will be able to scrutinise Trust policies and hold board members to account if patients’ care is compromised. I shall also be able to advise the Trust in formulating key strategies to prevent clinical negligence and improve the standard of patient care.
