Trust first in UK to launch ground-breaking technology to help cardiac patients

Royal Surrey is the first Trust in the UK to be pioneering a new treatment to improve outcomes for patients with coronary artery disease.

Over a year ago, the Trust’s Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory had a major refurbishment and one of the highlights of the upgrade was the introduction of Medis-QFR (Quantitative Flow Ratio) technology, which gives a non-surgical and highly accurate assessment of the circulation of blood to a patient’s heart through the arteries and veins.

Patients who have blocked or narrowed coronary arteries will receive a coronary angiogram that uses X-ray and special dye to show the blockage in the vessels of their heart, but in order to see if the narrowing is causing flow problems, a further invasive procedure is needed.

With the use of Medis-QFR technology, Royal Surrey can offer a non-interventional alternative procedure for patients requiring a diagnosis.

Dr Alvina Amin, Clinical Director for Cardiology, added, "We are incredibly proud to be one of the first centres offering this advanced investigation. It highlights our unwavering commitment to advancing patient care through innovation. This milestone marks a significant continuation of our journey toward delivering the most advanced cardiology services available, setting new standards in patient care both nationally and internationally".

As well as being the first in the UK, the Trust is just one of a few hospitals across the world to be using this technology. The use of Medis-QFR’s advanced 3D imaging makes diagnostic decision making around assessment of coronary lesions and blood flow restrictions faster and more reliable.

Dr TP Chua, Consultant Cardiologist, who delivered a presentation on the impact of Medis-QFR at the European Society of Cardiology, said: “It was rewarding to showcase our pioneering work on a global platform with the Trust’s Cardiology team in attendance. Our success is built on teamwork and this collaboration allows us to deliver world-class patient care, which we are very proud of.”
