For this week’s Team of the Week, we are celebrating the brilliant and hardworking Phlebotomy Team.
As part of Berkshire & Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS), the team plays a vital role in our Trust, helping patients on 13 wards, in six outpatient clinics, in clinics held at our community hospitals, and also at Farnham Road mental health hospital.
The 30-strong team delivers a high-quality, efficient, and compassionate service to patients needing blood tests. The team includes two team leaders, three senior phlebotomists, and 25 phlebotomists.
In the last year, the Phlebotomy Team has taken on a new challenge with its involvement in the setting up of our Trust’s Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), based at Milford Hospital. The team also expanded the services being offered at our community hospitals.
Philippa Wood, Phlebotomy Manager, praised the team’s dedication, commitment, and ability to adapt to new challenges. She said: “This last year has seen the team take over the Phlebotomy Outpatients’ Service at Haslemere Hospital, which now has a very smart new location in the Annexe building, alongside the new Maternity Hub. In addition, we have introduced a brand new service operating at Milford Hospital.
“These sites extend our offering of convenient locations for patients to attend for blood tests, with easy and free parking an added bonus.
“Being involved in the CDC has been an exciting but busy project, which has seen the team expand to accommodate the additional workload. It’s great to see these services up and running now and they are a valuable asset to the Trust and our local community. The team really enjoys working at the community sites and tend to receive lots of positive feedback from patients, which they thoroughly deserve.
“The members of our team work so well together, supporting one another both in and out of work. Later this year, on 1 October, we are planning to take part in Royal Surrey Charity’s sponsored walk, Stride for Cancer Care. It gives us a great opportunity to spend time together outside of work while raising money to support the invaluable cancer care work St Luke’s provides. We’re already well on our way to meeting our fundraising target with generous sponsorship from friends and family. I’m super proud of every member of the team.”
