An innovative idea from our prostate cancer clinical nurse specialists has seen them shortlisted for a sustainability award.
Maria Innes and Helen Casson have been named finalists for Sustainability Nurses of the Year at the British Journal of Nursing Awards for their self-removal catheter project after a robotic assisted prostatectomy.
This project, which was also previously shortlisted for a Nursing Times Award, means that patients, who come from across the south east, do not have to return to the hospital seven days after their operation to have their catheter removed.
Instead, our nursing team provides teaching to the patients prior to discharge, as well as written instructions and access to a demonstration video, so that they can carry this out in the comfort of their own home.
Since its introduction 1,000 men have benefited.
Maria and Helen will find out if they are winners at a prestigious ceremony later this month.
