Over 40 of our amazing staff stepped up to join Royal Surrey Charity for its sponsored walk, Stride for Cancer Care, on Sunday 1 October.
Sponsored by CBRE, the walk saw cancer patients, cancer survivors, and those walking in memory of loved ones, come together to raise vital funds for the future of world-class cancer care. Over £39,000 has been raised, with money still coming in.
CEO Louise Stead, Chair Joss Bigmore, and teams from across the Trust – including colleagues from Communications, HR, Transformation and Phlebotomy – also joined the charity walk.
Dr Sophie Otter, Chief of Service for Oncology, walked the 25km, along with other colleagues from St Luke’s. Speaking at the event, she said: “We want to make sure St Luke’s Cancer Centre is the most stress-free environment for patients who are going through really difficult times.
“Some of the money from today will go towards helping us develop some of those nicer bits -- to make it a more peaceful environment -- and also for some equipment and training for our staff as well.”
A group of patients cared for by our Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Service (TYAC), and their loved ones, also joined the 5km route donned in fancy dress in memory of Nicky Newman, who sadly died in September.
Nana Akowuah-Addo, Lead Nurse at TYAC, who was dressed as Minnie Mouse, said: “It’s been a really good turnout; it’s been quite amazing…obviously really mixed emotions. The charity means so much to us at TYAC because we can support other patients living with cancer. It’s been a really good experience and I appreciate everyone coming out today.”
Walkers enjoyed a warm-up and goody bags kindly provided by Guildford Nuffield Health, a chance to grab a selfie under the balloon arch, and food and drink along the way. Royal Surrey dieticians Lindsey Allan and Tanya Klopper were also on hand to offer nutrition advice, and yoga and stretching were provided by Emma McGuiness.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event, watch this space for news of Stride for Cancer Care 2024.
