Millbridge Ward Staff Nurse Josephine Arthur, who is known as ‘Mama Josie’, is retiring after 51 years of service in the Royal Surrey. Josie started in the community, based in Milford in 1971, and later moved to the main hospital in 1980, where she has become a much-loved member of the Millbridge team.
Josie said: “Millbridge is my family home. I lost my husband 25 years ago and the team gave me strength which kept me going.”
Josie had previously retired but then decided that she still had several years of NHS service left in her. She returned and dedicated more years to proudly serving her local community. During her time with us, Josie has trained new students and supported colleagues.
She added: “They respect me here. They call me Mama Josie, even the patients. I’ve enjoyed my career here.”
Jo Mountjoy, Chief Nurse, said: “Mama Josie is an inspiring nurse who has given her life and dedication to our patients. She is loved and respected by the whole Millbridge team and beyond. She’s an incredible character, everybody loves her and she will be hugely missed.”
We'd like to thank Josie for her service and wish her a long and happy future.
