Congratulations to Dr Hashir Aazh, an honorary hearing research consultant at Royal Surrey, who has received the ‘Friends Forever’ plaque from the World Hearing Centre in Kajetany, Poland.
The plaque was given in recognition of Hashir’s scientific contributions to the activities led by the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing.
His field of expertise involves studies on sound intolerance disorders and over the past two years, he has been supporting the institute to organise the Seventh International Conference on Hyperacusis and Misophonia.
Hyperacusis is the perception of day-to-day sounds (for example, ambient noise in public places or domestic noise, traffic, etc.) as too loud or painful. Misophonia is perceiving certain sounds linked to oral function (such as chewing), nasal sounds (breathing), and repetitive sounds such as tapping or clicking as disgusting or annoying, leading to profound emotional, physiological, and behavioural reactions.
Hashir said: “I was very pleased to receive the Friends Forever plaque and welcomed the opportunity to speak at the conference and share the importance of research carried out into sound disorders, which has the potential to improve the lives of patients experiencing them. It’s important to raise awareness among healthcare professionals about these little known conditions.”
Hashir was the Trust’s Tinnitus team lead and Research and Development lead in the audiology department until 2021 and now volunteers his help on studies relating to tinnitus and sound intolerance.
