Nana Akowuah-Addo - Clinical Nurse Specialist

Nana Akowuah-Addo

Clinical Nurse Specialist Nana Akowuah-Addo works with people aged 18-30 who are being treated for cancer in our dedicated ward for teenagers and young people.

“The biggest change I’ve noticed since joining 16 years ago is that we now take a more holistic approach to patient care. We don’t just provide medical care for cancer, we extend our care to the psychological health of our patients and their families. We get to know them well, which is lovely.

“Our ward is decorated with a holiday theme because that’s what our patients wanted. Cancer is a grim disease for anyone to deal with, and no one expects a diagnosis before they are 30. Our patients want to focus on something positive they can do once they’ve completed their cancer treatment and are back on their feet; very often that is a holiday.

“We share tips on where we’ve been and where we’d like to go– I had an absolutely fantastic holiday in Scotland on a patient’s recommendation.

“Royal Surrey feels like a family. I have supportive colleagues and the different teams complement each other. And we benefit from a strong leadership team that always strives for the best. Everyone is always willing to help each other to give patients the best experience.

“I love what I do because I see that my work makes a positive difference.”
