Mark Halling-Brown, Head of Scientific Computing, joined Royal Surrey in 2011 and is one of the many people who support our cancer services behind the scenes.

He leads a team of 20 developers focused on automating process that can improve patient care and free up our clinical team to spend more time with their patients.

“Many people confuse Computing with IT, but it’s not the same. We are developers who create bespoke software, databases and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools that help us deliver better hospital services for our patients.

“For example, our clinical databases store very detailed information about different procedures and treatments in many cancer specialities. These databases need to help doctors review, evaluate and optimise treatment programmes easily – they can save doctors hours of time.

“We also undertake and support a huge amount of research. One stand out project for me is our development of AI to detect breast cancer using x-ray images. In a large study this was shown to be better at diagnosing breast cancer than a radiologist. I hope that this work will accelerate the safe adoption of Artificial Intelligence tools into the NHS.

“We interact with a huge number of different people and see lots of amazing work. The common factor is people’s dedication and passion. This inspires my whole team to work even harder. Being a help – even a tiny one – to such excellent people is a privilege.”
