Dr Alexander Stewart has worked at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford since 2008. She treats gynaecologic and ano-rectal cancers. She has a specialist interest in brachytherapy and completed a two-year brachytherapy Fellowship at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard University in Boston during her training. She has developed the brachytherapy service at the Royal Surrey to deliver image-guided gynaecologic brachytherapy, oesophageal and rectal brachytherapy including using the Papillon technique. She has worked with the Royal Surrey team to deliver adaptive radiotherapy for cervix cancer patients.
Dr Stewart has a strong interest in the clinical applications of brachytherapy and has written several textbook chapters on this subject, in addition to published papers. She holds an honorary contract at the University of Surrey as a Visiting Senior.
Dr Stewart is a member of the Royal College of Radiologists audit and quality improvement committee and has led national audits on prostate brachytherapy, endometrial cancer and vulvar cancer. Continuing her focus on quality improvement, she has led the development of national and international guidelines for rectal brachytherapy and vulvar cancer radiotherapy. Dr Stewart is also the chair of the GI GEC ESTRO group, an international group focussing on gastro-intestinal brachytherapy research and treatment.
