Piers Gatenby studied undergraduate medicine at Cambridge University and clinical medicine at Oxford University, where he graduated in 1999. He undertook basic surgical training in South East London before commencing doctoral studies at UCL. He graduated from UCL with his MD in 2007.
Subsequently, he undertook higher surgical training with an interest in oesophagogastric surgery in North West London including Imperial College NHS Trust and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. He worked as clinical advisor to the NHS Medical Director from 2009-2010 and has undertaken a fellowship in oesophagogastric surgery at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, Australia and including a visit to the Cancer Institute Hospital in Tokyo, Japan.
