Originally trained in Basic Science with a subsequent PhD in Fast Reaction Physical Chemistry followed by Medical Training at St George's Hospital Medical School in London. Specialist training was undertaken on the London Postgraduate Medical Schools Rotation with Registrar training in Renal Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine at St Thomas' Hospital followed by ICU and Nephrology training at St Thomas' and St George's. He was a Consultant Intensivist and Nephrologist at the Western Sussex Hospitals Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Sussex for over 10 years before moving to his current post at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust and at the School of Medicine at the University of Surrey.  

Research interests include pre-operative assessment of high-risk surgical candidates, all aspects of renal replacement therapy, diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment of acute kidney injury and predictive modelling in acute medical admissions. He has published over 150 papers including many book chapters. He is a referee for over 20 journals and is on the editorial board of several. 

He has been the UK Principal investigator for several International studies as well as currently being the joint lead investigator for a 60 centre UK based study. He has been an advisor for NCEPOD and was a founder member of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) AKI group being elected Chair of the section in 2013 followed by election to the Chair of the Research Committee for the ESICM and subsequently elected as the Secretary for the ESICM.  

He was also an elected member of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine in the UK. He is a founder member and President Elect of the International Society of Critical Care Nephrology. He has been a faculty member for numerous International conferences including the ESICM, SRLF, SMART and GREAT meetings as well as the ICS and a faculty member of the ADQI group. He is invited to lecture nationally and Internationally. He has received several honours including the prestigious Vicenza Awards for services to Critical Care Nephrology.  

When not at work he is to be found trying to sail whilst often bemoaning the performances of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
