Professor William (Bill) Fawcett graduated from Guy’s Hospital in 1985. He undertook the majority of his postgraduate medical training in central London and became a consultant at Guildford in 1994. He has a major interest in postoperative analgesia and works as part of the inpatient pain team. He was lead clinician of anaesthesia and intensive care from 2003-2008.
Bill has also had a major role in research, teaching and examining. He has over 200 publications including 30 research papers, three textbooks and 21 book chapters. He has lectured in the UK, Europe, North America, The Middle East, South Africa and Indonesia, and has been an external examiner for higher degrees (MD, PhD and MSc) at the Universities of Surrey, Nottingham and overseas at Copenhagen and Witwatersrand. In 2024, he was appointed as an Honorary Professor at the School of Medicine at Surrey University.
Nationally, he was elected to The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland and became their Vice President. He was unanimously awarded their Featherstone Professorship in 2018 for contributions to research, publications, innovation, leadership and education. He has also held posts at Department of Health, Getting in Right First Time (GIRFT), National Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Deaths (NCEPOD) and National Assessor for maternal mortality (MBBRACE-UK). He is an Editor for BJA Education.
He has won various prizes including two British Journal of Surgery’s John Farndon Prize for their best published manuscript (2012 and 2016) and The British Medical Association’s Book of the year award in 2018.
Bill is an overenthusiastic pianist and under-enthusiastic runner. He divides his time between the Surrey Hills and the North Cornwall coast. In the latter he cycles and also observes people undertaking water sports from a safe distance.
