Dr Johnston graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School, Imperial College London, with a Medical Degree and an Honours Degree in Sociology and Philosophy of Science. He undertook training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in London and the South Coast, also completing a Masters Degree in Management and was appointed as a Darzi Clinical Leadership Fellow, undertaking a year long Fellowship in 2009 at the University of Sussex.  

Appointed as a locum Consultant at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust in 2012, he was successfully appointed as a substantive Consultant a year later, with a special interest in High-Risk Anaesthesia and Enhanced Recovery after Surgery.  

During his time as a Consultant at the Royal Surrey, Dr Johnston has held multiple roles in the Trust, including member of the Local Negotiating Committee, Theatres Clinical Risk Group, Chair of the Enhanced Recovery Steering Group, Chair of the SPACE Board, Masters Student Supervisor and Simulation Lead. He has also held Senior Leadership roles within the Trust, namely Professional Director of Innovation and Transformation, Deputy Chief of Service for the Surgical Division and Deputy Medical Director. He was a member of the Clinical Executive Committee between 2017-2021.  

Dr Johnston has lectured Nationally on Enhanced Recovery for Gynaecology and Colorectal surgery, including presenting to NHS Scotland at the launch of their Enhanced Recovery program, as well as twice at the British Association of Day Surgery and multiple times at the University of Surrey. He is the named author on multiple abstracts and presentations.

He continues to Chair the SPACE Board, overseeing clinical pathways within the Trust and more recently, has presented Nationally on the Day Case Robotic Prostatectomy project, for which is he is the Anaesthetic Lead, as well as the Anaesthetic Lead for the Gynaecology Day Case projects, both oncological and benign.
